Word by word
When to use it
A short, general "have fun!" said before someone heads off to an enjoyable activity — a party, a game, an outing — when the activity itself doesn't need to be named. When the activity is named, you'll hear phrases like เที่ยวให้สนุก (thîaw hây sa-nùk) — Have fun on your trip; or ดูหนังให้สนุก (duu nǎng hây sa-nùk) — Enjoy the movie. ขอให้สนุก (khɔ̌ɔ-hây sa-nùk) is the all-purpose version.
Why you've seen it spelled differently
You may have seen ขอให้สนุก written as: kor hai sanuk, kho hai sanook, khor hai sanuk.
There is no single standard for writing Thai in the Roman alphabet — phrasebooks, road signs, and tourist guides each follow a different system, and many just invent their own spellings. The romanization on this page uses a consistent IPA-based system that marks all five tones and distinguishes short from long vowels. The same word always gets the same spelling.
